The Executive Committee meeting of the IBU Cup Final 2017/18 took place in Khanty-Mansiysk.
The meeting was attended by IBU race director Felix Bitterling, vice-president of the Russian Biathlon Union directorate Vadim Melikhov, director of AI “UgraMegaSport”, executive director of IBU Cup 8 Valery Radchenko and function supervisors of “UgraMegaSport”.
Valery Radchenko has greeted the guests of the city, participating in the inspection of Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center. Special attention was paid to security measures and medical support on the stadium. Thus, according to the new regulations of IBU, every sport venue shall be equipped with defibrillator at free access.
One of the main novelties of IBU Cup 8 is a new race – Super Sprint. Although this format is not new, the race was not included in IBU calendar before. “Yesterday we have defined a 800 meter lap, that will be the main one for this discipline, — says Felix Bitterling. — The race will have two parts: qualifications and finals. Athletes with top 30 results will participate in finals. There will be two shootings in qualifications, while in finals participants will have to run 5 laps with 4 shootings. The penalty loop will be 75 meters long”.
Besides, during the meeting the issues of sport fans and security measures as well as media coverage of the event were discussed. The executive director of IBU Cup Final has stated that the races of Khanty-Mansiysk leg will be broadcasted live on federal TV channels.
When IBU commission had received answers to all its questions IBU race director has commented on the compliance of Winter Sports Center to the highest international standards as well as the professionalism of the organizers: “Khanty-Mansiysk has a big experience in hosting major biathlon events. Besides, it is well-known by its spectacular opening and closing ceremonies, that are kept in the memories of athletes for a long time”.
In the end of the meeting upon the results of the inspection Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center of Khanty-Mansiysk was awarded A-license of the International Biathlon Union for the biathlon facility. This is a proof that the stadium is ready to host the biggest biathlon events including World Cups and World Championships. Accommodation and sport facilities as well as personnel and media do not only comply with IBU standards but exceed the international requirements.
It is to be reminded that IBU Cup Final 2017/18 will take place in Ugra on March 13-17. It is also worth noting that before going to Khanty-Mansiysk the participants of IBU Cup will compete in Uvat, Russia.
Russian athletes show traditionally good results in IBU Cup races. During the last 5 years men’s team of Russia has won overall team total of the season four times and only once it was the second. Women’s team was the absolute leader winning all 5 seasons. In season 2016/2017 athletes from Ugra Alexey Volkov and Daria Virolainen were the winners of IBU Cup total.
